Stop Avoiding the Conversation That's Killing Your Deal
TACTICAL TUESDAY #6: Why the hardest conversation in your pipeline is also the most important one
Tactical Tuesday breaks down the real challenges sellers face and gives you a practical way to attack them. Short, sharp, and built for the field — not the classroom.
The Big Problem
You’ve got a deal or a deal-killer sitting in your pipeline right now that you’re avoiding. The pricing pushback you haven’t addressed. The stakeholder who’s gone quiet. The “we’re also looking at a competitor” comment you let slide. You know the conversation needs to happen. You keep finding reasons it can wait one more day.
How Most People Solve It
They wait for the “right time.” They send another check-in email instead of picking up the phone. They hope the prospect brings it up first so they don’t have to. They tell themselves they’re “building rapport” when really they’re just stalling.
Why It Doesn’t Work
Silence doesn’t make friction disappear — it lets it compound. Every day you avoid the hard conversation, the deal gets colder and the buyer’s doubt gets louder in their own head, unanswered. By the time you finally address it, you’re not negotiating from strength. You’re playing catch-up in the fourth quarter down two scores.
A Better Way
Tough conversations aren’t the threat to the deal. Avoiding them is. The sellers who win enterprise deals aren’t the smoothest talkers, they’re the ones willing to lean into friction instead of around it. Treat the hard conversation like a third-down play: high pressure, high stakes, exactly where you earn the right to move the chains.
Reframe it: every uncomfortable question you ask is a qualification test. If the deal can’t survive a direct conversation, it wasn’t a real deal, it was a hope dressed up as a forecast line.
Action Steps
Name the friction out loud — to yourself first, then to the buyer. “I want to address something directly” beats dancing around it every time.
Pick up the phone. Hard conversations die in email threads and live in real dialogue.
Ask the question you’re afraid of. “Are we still the front-runner?” “What’s the real blocker on budget?” Silence is not information — a direct answer is.
Set a 48-hour rule: if you’ve been avoiding a conversation for more than two days, it goes on today’s call list. No exceptions.
Deal Advancement Scorecard
Before your next tough conversation, score the deal honestly:
Do you know the real objection, or just the surface-level one? (1–5)
Have you addressed it directly, or worked around it? (1–5)
Is your champion still willing to fight for you internally? (1–5)
If you’re under 9 total, that conversation isn’t optional anymore.
