How to Effectively Communicate with Executives

You want deals to move faster? Sell higher.
You want fewer stalls, ghosting, and internal “maybes”? Get to the top.
Whenever possible, start at the highest level - CEO, CFO, CTO, CMO, CISO. When the boss pushes things down, everyone else moves. Calendars open. Approvals accelerate. No more, “Let me run it up the chain.”
But and this is where most AEs blow it, you can’t talk to a C-level exec like you do to a Director or VP.
Different altitude. Different mindset. Different priorities.
❌ What the C-Suite Doesn’t Give a Damn About:
Your product
Your features
Your roadmap
Your webinar
Your company’s latest award
They’re not buying you. They’re buying results.
✅ What the C-Suite Actually Cares About:
Increasing company value
Driving revenue growth
Cutting costs
Improving net margins
Retaining top talent
If your pitch doesn’t tie directly to one of those, you’re just noise.
So How Do You Talk to the C-Suite?
Here’s the playbook:
✔ Do:
Lead with business impact.
→ “We helped [peer company] cut onboarding time by 42% and saved them $1.8M.”Be direct and brief.
→ You’ve got maybe 30 seconds to earn another 5 minutes.Use numbers, not BS.
→ “This will increase your margin by 6% this year.” Not “optimize workflows.”Have a POV.
→ “We believe [problem] is costing your team [X]. Here’s how we fix that—fast.”Make the ask clear.
→ “Open to a quick convo to see if this is worth exploring?” or “Can you refer me to someone on your team”
✘ Don’t:
Send a feature dump
Pitch like a junior rep
Ask basic questions you could’ve Googled
Ramble
Follow up with “just checking in”
✅ Tone Check
Sharp, not slick
Strategic, not salesy
Confident, not cocky
Direct, not desperate
Enthusiastic, not ecstatic
You’re not selling to them. You’re selling with them, as a partner helping solve a business problem. Elevate your skills to become a trusted advisor, and not another sales guy/gal.
